SUTTON WATERCOLOURISTS
Sutton Watercolourists group was formed by artists who met in a SCOLA class in 1981, under the tutelage of Lorna Murray. The group was formed in 1986 and their aim was to explore and develop the potential of watercolours and bring it the public notice. Their first major exhibition, held at Sutton Library 21st September 1989, sold 27 paintings, many of these by Fred Gillespie and Arthur Wootton.
Development of the group
Fred Gillespie has had his paintings shown in the Open exhibition of the Marine Artists exhibition at the Mall Gallery as well at other venues. Other current members of the group, Elizabeth Court, Jane Spencer have been part of the Royal Watercolour Society’s Open Exhibition at the Bankside Gallery during recent years. One of our founder members Sarah Holliday who moved out of the area is now a professional painter and member of the the Royal Watercolour Society. Sarah has appeared on radio and TV. All members show their work at a wide range of venues.
Each year, at our annual exhibition, we invite members of the public to vote for their favourite painting and the artist with the most votes has their name engraved on a silver tray which was kindly donated by Lorna Murray. This also gives us an idea of the interest there is in our work- so please do vote at our next exhibition.
Paula Pears Trophy
We now have the Paula Pears trophy for the most original painting in the exhibition and this is chosen by the members. This award is in memory of Paula Pears
Meetings
The group meets most Tuesday evenings at 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm in Cheam Village Library. If you are interested in joining click here We are pleased to have new members, as a vacancies arise, but especially keen to welcome younger members.
